Mikhail Ulyanov
Biography
Mikhail Ulyanov was a Russian actor and director who spent most of his working life at the Vakhtangov Drama Theatre in Moscow. Born in the village of Bergamak in Omsk province, he trained at the Shchukin Theatrical School of the Vakhtangov Theatre from 1946 to 1950 under Boris Zakhava and graduated as an actor in 1950. From then until his death in 2007 he was a permanent member of the Vakhtangov troupe, and in 1987 he took over as artistic director of the Vakhtangov Theatre. He became known for playing Soviet-era heroes and other officially approved role models, among them V. I. Lenin, and for impersonating Marshal Georgi Zhukov in several war films. His parts included General Charnota in Beg (1971). He also directed a stage production of an unfinished project by Vasiliy Shukshin, and he collected numerous Soviet and Russian awards and decorations, including the State Prize of the USSR.
