Plot summary
In the early years of the 19th century, travelers stop at the remote outpost kept by Samson Vyrin, who lives there with his young daughter Dunya. A hussar from Petersburg, Minsky, takes an interest in the station master's daughter, and Dunya leaves home with him on a winter morning against her father's wishes. Years later a traveler who had stopped there before comes back, hoping to see Dunya again, and finds the old station master still at his outpost. The brokenhearted Vyrin tells him the story of the winter morning his daughter went away with the dashing fellow from Petersburg.
