Plot summary
Franco Arnò is a blind man who once worked as a reporter and now lives with his niece Lori close to the Terzi Institute. While out walking with her, he catches a conversation between two men sitting in a car parked near the building and asks Lori to memorize their faces. That night the institute is broken into, though nothing appears to be taken. The following morning one of its researchers, Dr. Calabresi, is killed at a railway station, which the police treat as an accident. Lori, seeing his photograph in the press, says he was one of the men from the car. Franco takes the story to Carlo Giordani, a journalist, and the pair set out to follow nine leads, among them the institute's scientists, its director's daughter Anna, and Calabresi's fiancée Bianca Merusi.

- Dario Argento and Dardano Sacchetti split the screenplay for The Cat o' Nine Tails, but since the production was set up on the first 40 pages, all written by Argento, Argento demanded sole screenplay credit. Sacchetti's story-only credit meant a pay cut and sparked a bitter public dispute with Argento and producer Salvatore Argento.
