Plot summary
Sir Thomas Hilton, a wealthy wine-grower, calls his descendants to his deathbed, tells them the story of his life, and announces that the family's dark secret, a power over human cells, will die with him. He curses his children for their greed. After the burial, a notary reads the will: the estate is to remain whole and be split equally among the heirs, but Evelyn, Thomas's sister, is cut out for the hatred she has shown the family. The heirs stay on in the castle and give themselves over to pleasure without restraint. Evelyn knows the secret Thomas thought he had taken to the grave. One by one, the relatives die of unnatural causes, and the police begin to look into Evelyn.
