Horst Frank
Biography
Horst Frank was a German actor known for villains in European westerns and potboilers. Born in Lübeck, he paid for his acting studies with part-time jobs as a babysitter and a night watchman. He failed his final examinations at the Musikhochschule Hamburg, yet still found an acting post in his home town, where his early work was limited to small stage and radio parts. He made his screen debut as the cowardly flier of Der Stern von Afrika (1957), and a critic's award followed for his part as a U-Boat crew member in Sharks and Little Fish (1957). He was soon typed as a psychotic murderer in German and international films, and as a henchman in spaghetti westerns including Django, Prepare a Coffin (1968). He also took guest roles on crime shows like Tatort and Derrick, dubbed voices for Jack Palance and Ernest Borgnine, and voiced Captain Nemo on radio. He died in 1999.
