Plot summary
In Perugia, art professor Franz lectures on a painting by Perugino. Jane, an American exchange student, stays after class with her friend Dani, and Stefano, a student whose feelings for Dani are not returned, trails her. That night a masked intruder strangles Flo, a friend of Carol, another student, with a scarf patterned in black and red. When police show the scarf to the students, the killer telephones Dani and threatens her about what she saw. Dani's uncle urges her to spend a few days at the family villa in Tagliacozzo, and she asks Jane, Katia and Ursula to come along. Jane leaves her car at a service station outside Perugia and gets a ride up to the villa.
