Plot summary
Ann keeps a room in her apartment for the butterflies she pins, and she has been estranged from her daughter Dorothy since Dorothy was a child. In a mall she sees Alice, a girl crying because the money for a doll was stolen, and buys her the doll. Alice later visits, gives her a portrait she drew, and asks to keep the money instead of repaying it, saying her mother is disabled. Ann agrees and offers to tutor her in French; Alice says she will come back. In Ann's building, Julie, the daughter of her neighbor Claudia, is locked out in the corridor, and Ann invites her in to wait for her mother. Claudia comes home and asks Ann to dinner in thanks.
