Plot summary
In 1995, after losing money to a business associate's Ponzi scheme, funeral home owner Jeremiah O'Keefe must sell parts of his business to meet demands from the Mississippi State Insurance Commission. He makes a deal with Raymond Loewen of the Loewen Group, which is to buy three funeral homes; O'Keefe insists the company not sell funeral insurance. Four months pass without payment, and Raymond breaks that oral agreement. O'Keefe hires Willie E. Gary, a Florida personal injury lawyer, believing contract lawyer Mike Allred cannot convince the jury. Allred wants an $8 million settlement; Gary says they could get $100 million, so O'Keefe names him lead attorney and re-mortgages his home to pay him. Loewen hires a Black legal team fronted by Mame Downes.
