Plot summary

In 1930s Tiancheng County, Boss Ding runs a bullet factory and keeps his workers in line through fear. When a female worker is accused of stealing a box of bullets, she dies in a public game of Russian roulette. Soon after, a red warning about a phantom bullet appears on the factory walls, and the workers are ordered to scrub it off. Then more employees are shot, and no bullet is ever recovered, so talk of a curse spreads through the factory. Police chief Jin summons Song Donglu, a newly promoted detective, to work with Guo Zhui, the fastest gunman in Tiancheng, and the novice policeman Xiaowu on the case.
