Plot summary
China enters the Korean War, and the People's Volunteer Army crosses into North Korea in the winter of 1950. Wu Qianli, who commands the 7th Company, has just come home from the Chinese Civil War when his leave is canceled. His younger brother Wanli had been refused permission to enlist, yet he is now stationed with the company. On the way north the soldiers mock Wanli, and Qianli will not lend him a hand or hand over a rifle. When a train is bombed while the tracks are being repaired, the company continues on foot, keeping clear of American aircraft. In Beijing, the Politburo debates whether the American crossing of the 38th parallel and the American presence in Korea put China's security at risk. The Eastern Front lies under snow and temperatures below freezing.
