Plot summary
Gong Yutian, a martial arts grandmaster from northern China, arrives in Foshan and announces that he has retired and named Ma San as his heir in the North. He says the South should also have an heir. Southern masters argue over a representative, and Gong Yutian's daughter Gong Er tries to stop her father, believing the southern masters are unworthy. The southern masters choose Ip Man. Three of them test his skill before he meets Gong Yutian, and their confrontation becomes an exchange of philosophy over a flat cake. Ip breaks the cake, and Gong Yutian calls him the winner. Gong Er then challenges Ip Man to restore her family's honor. Ip proposes that whoever damages the furniture loses. Their contest leaves them on friendly terms, and Ip hopes for a rematch. War soon disrupts his plans to travel north.
