Plot summary
In 1910, at an international tournament in Shanghai, Huo Yuanjia has already beaten three foreign challengers and awaits a fourth, and his mind goes back over his life. As a boy with asthma he studied martial arts in secret, against the wishes of his father, a fighter who did not want him in the ring. After watching his father lose and suffering humiliation himself, Huo set out to restore the Huo family name. After his father died, Huo fought lei tai matches in Tianjin and became a celebrated fighter there whose pride grew with his fame. He spent his fortune and pushed away his childhood friend Nong Jinsun.

- In March 2006, Huo Yuanjia's descendants sued Jet Li and the film's producers and distributors for defamation over historical inaccuracies; one 81-year-old grandson complained the film showed his grandfather causing "trouble" and being a violent fighter, and a Beijing court dismissed the case in December 2006.
- Fearless was originally about 140 minutes long but had to be cut to 105 minutes for its theatrical run, removing scenes with Michelle Yeoh and a fight between Jet Li and Somluck Kamsing.
- Jet Li said Fearless would be his last wushu martial arts film, a point also made in the film's television promotions, though he would still do action films with martial arts and did not rule out historical epics with martial arts.
- The ending theme song, sharing the film's title, was composed and sung by Jay Chou, who sings segments in a falsetto; the Japanese release replaced it with "Crime" by High and Mighty Color, upsetting many Japanese fans of the original song.
