Plot summary
When his compadre dies in an accident, a shoeshiner with little money takes in the man's son, Chavita. The boy's mother, Leonor, cannot support him and travels to Guadalajara to ask her parents for help. He takes Chavita to Chapultepec, where the boy catches a ball belonging to other children and a quarrel with the owner's nanny follows. He calms the boy by promising a new ball, then sets out to earn one. Hoping for better paid work, he enrolls in a school, where he is taken with Raquel, a teacher. His first job is at a night club, where he wanders into the dancers' dressing room and into the middle of a Boléro act, mistaking the piece's name for the word for shoeshiner.
