Plot summary
Viridiana is close to her final vows as a nun and at ease in the solitude of her Spanish convent. Her Mother Superior orders one visit to Don Jaime, the uncle who paid for her education and whom she has met only once. Reluctant and uncomfortable outside the convent, she travels to his estate, where he lives as a recluse, cared for by his servant Ramona. Stirred by how closely his niece resembles his wife, who died on their wedding night, he asks Viridiana to put on the wedding dress and veil he has kept. She refuses to stay, and he grows determined to keep her there.

- The government of Francisco Franco banned Viridiana in Spain after the Holy See's newspaper called it blasphemous, and Spanish authorities tried to burn the original negative; it survived only because it was with a foreign company that had done post-production work. Spain did not release the film until 1977, two years after Franco's death, when Buñuel was 77.
