Plot summary
Macario is a poor Indigenous woodcutter in colonial Mexico, and his family lives at the edge of starvation. On the Day of the Dead he watches a procession of roast turkeys go by and declares that he will not eat again until he can eat a whole turkey by himself. His wife steals one and hands it to him as he leaves for the mountains. Before he can eat, three strangers appear: the Devil as a gentleman, God as an old man, and a peasant who is Death. Only the third gets a share of the meal. In payment, Death names Macario a friend and gives him water that heals any illness.
