Plot summary

Padre Nazario lives in a hostel, distributes his money and is indifferent to being burgled. He shows understanding to Beatriz, who suffers psychotic episodes and thoughts of suicide after Pinto, her lover, abandons her. Andara, a prostitute, runs into his room seeking shelter; she has killed another prostitute and is wounded. Nazario withholds judgment and helps conceal her, and tries to awaken her sense of sin. Andara has a hallucination in which a portrait of Jesus Christ appears to laugh at her. Beatriz brings word that someone has told the authorities. The proprietress of the hostel learns of it and forbids Andara to be found in Nazario's company, telling her to clear away any sign that she stayed there. Nazario has fallen foul of the law and the church, and is warned that an inquiry could cost him his priesthood.
