SPOILER
Actor Folke Hjort, who played Jossi, drowned in a diving accident less than three months before the film's release — the same fate as his character in the film and the book.- Swedish censors gave the film an 11 certificate, unique among adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's work, and the Riksdag then set an age limit of 7 and above for future films. The film kept its 11 limit for years until a 7 limit called "Lex Lejonhjärta" was accepted.
- The line "All power to Tengil, our liberator!" (in Swedish, All makt åt Tengil, vår befriare!) entered wide Swedish use, quoted ironically to voice loyalty and submission to the dictator Lord Tengil of Karmanjaka.
