Plot summary
Satan is tormented by a stye in his eye, and his advisers trace the pain to Britt-Marie, a vicar's daughter of twenty who has kept her chastity and is engaged to Jonas. If she is defiled before the wedding, the pain will leave him. Satan summons Don Juan, who has spent three hundred years in hell in a repetitive punishment: a woman arrives threatening to kill him, he charms her, and a demon halts the scene. Satan offers Don Juan relief from this if he succeeds with Britt-Marie, and Don Juan agrees on the condition that Pablo, his servant, come with him. On Earth the vicar welcomes the pair into his house. Pablo grows interested in the vicar's wife, Renata, while Don Juan turns his attention to Britt-Marie.
