Plot summary
During a thunderstorm, a traveling circus drives off without a young plains zebra. Kentucky farmer Nolan Walsh finds the foal and brings him home to his daughter Channing, who names him Stripes; the farm is also home to Tucker, a Shetland pony, Franny, a goat, and Reggie, a rooster. Nolan once trained racehorses but gave that up for a quiet life. Stripes becomes fixed on Turfway Park, the track next door, sure he is meant to run there, though he is a zebra among thoroughbreds, and he takes a liking to Sandy, an Arabian filly. The foals Trenton's Pride and Ruffshodd challenge him to a race, and Pride's father, Sir Trenton, orders them to keep away from him. Tucker offers to teach Stripes properly, and Stripes chooses Channing as his rider.

- During production Hayden Panettiere was thrown off a zebra and ended up hospitalized with a concussion and a pinched nerve in her neck; the producers forbade her from mentioning the injury during publicity, and she finally revealed it during a 2013 episode of The Graham Norton Show.
- Two racing zebras, Sam and Daisy, were used in the film. Sam was the more well-behaved one and "kind of wanted to be a horse", according to Tim Rivers, who trained him, and he had previously appeared in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Second Noah and Sheena.
- The film was shot on location in South Africa, at the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg and the Riverholm Country Estate in Nottingham Road.
