Plot summary
Fourteen-year-old Milly Michaelson moves to a new suburban neighborhood with her mother Charlene and her younger brother Louis, after the death of her father. Charlene copes with a demotion at work, and Louis is harassed by boys who keep him from riding around the block. Milly befriends a neighbor, Geneva. Next door is Eric Gibb, a boy with autism who does not speak, cared for by his uncle Hugo, who drinks. Neighbors say a plane crash killed Eric's parents. Eric is drawn to flight. A neighbor, Mrs. Sherman, wants Milly to watch over Eric, afraid that without Hugo's care he could be committed. Milly tells Geneva she finds Eric attractive, and through the school year she builds a connection with him, tracking his small progress.

- The band The Coupe de Villes, made up of Nick Castle, horror director and composer John Carpenter and director Tommy Lee Wallace, appear in a cameo on a television in the film, playing their original song "Back on the Bus".
- The film's score was composed and conducted by Bruce Broughton, and when Intrada Records issued the complete score in 2015 it included Stephen Bishop's "Walkin' On Air", written and recorded for the end credits in lieu of Broughton's unused end title cue.
