Plot summary
Diana is an aspiring writer in Brooklyn. On a first date in a rowboat in Prospect Park she meets Ben, a musician, and over the following year the two become a couple. Ben wants the long marriage his parents have; Diana is planning to move to London and wants no distractions or commitments. When Ben offers to come with her, she turns him down and ends things before she goes. Three years on, Diana is back in Brooklyn and takes an apartment that her best friend Gabby's friend Meg found for her. Ben lives in the downstairs apartment, and he is seeing Meg. Diana, who is supposed to be working on her novel, watches the two of them instead.
