Plot summary
Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny Alden cross from the mainland to Surprise Island, the private island their grandfather, James Henry Alden, owns. Captain Daniel carries them over in his motorboat, and the children make a barn their summer home. Henry, the oldest, is protective of his younger siblings and good with wood, building things and folding paper birds. Jessie, the older sister, takes care of the family and does the cooking and housework. Violet paints and does arts and crafts, and Joe, who helps Captain Daniel with chores, teaches her the violin. Benny, the youngest, is mischievous, calls Joe his best friend, and squabbles with Mike, whose brother is Pat. The Aldens' dog, Watch, keeps company with Spotty, the dog Pat and Mike have.
