Plot summary
Rodrigo Borgia has spent thirty years climbing the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church, and the college of cardinals now elects him pope. Religious feeling plays no part in his ambition; he wants authority, and as Alexander VI he turns it against his rivals. His four children serve as the pawns of the dynasty he intends to build. Rodrigo marries Lucrezia and Jofré into rival families to strengthen alliances, while Juan takes command of the Vatican army. The eldest, Cesare, is made cardinal, a rank he dislikes; he sees himself as the family's fighter and considers his brother's military command a better fit.
