Plot summary
Zak is 22 and has spent two and a half years at the Britthayven Retirement Home in Richmond, Virginia, where Eleanor is his caregiver. He watches a tape of his favorite wrestler, the Salt Water Redneck, and dreams of training at the school in Ayden, North Carolina, advertised on it. On his third attempt, other residents help him get out. Tyler works at a boat shop in the river estuaries, poaches blue crab traps, and is heading for Jupiter, Florida, after the death of his brother Mark, having burned the gear of two rivals, Duncan and Ratboy. Zak and Tyler meet, and Tyler agrees to coach him and help him reach Ayden.

- Directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz met Zack Gottsagen at a camp for actors with disabilities in Venice, California, around 2011, and he asked them to make a film with him; after they shot a $20,000 proof-of-concept video with producer David Thies, they got funding for a film starring him.
- Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson wanted to play the music that inspired them while writing, so on set they used a boombox to play the same music before each scene was performed.
