Plot summary

Lieutenant Jordan has asked to leave the Balboa Island station where he answers distress calls from pleasure boaters, and hands his post over to Ensign Tom Garland, the clumsy new skipper of the cutter Point Maley, who reports to Commander Taylor, a man who served with Garland's father in the war. Garland falls for Kate Fairchild, who manages a boat rental and sailing school, and their first meeting leaves her covered in paint. Meanwhile Harry Simmons, posing as a yacht club commodore, directs Charlie and Max as they carry stolen jewels toward Mexico hidden inside hollowed-out food, then rent a boat from Kate, though none of them can sail. A picnic hamper holding the food goes overboard.
