Plot summary
The Vandals are a Chicago motorcycle club, and Benny Cross rides with them. Five weeks after meeting Kathy Bauer in 1965, he marries her. Danny Lyon, a photography student, keeps company with the Vandals and writes down what the members tell him. Kathy explains how the club began: Johnny Davis, its founder, took the idea from watching Marlon Brando in a film about bikers called The Wild One. Johnny leads the Vandals. When one member argues that new chapters should be allowed to form, the two men fight, and Johnny wins, then grants the expansion he had refused. Chapters open across the Midwest.

- The Bikeriders takes its name from photographer Danny Lyon's book on the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, and writer-director Jeff Nichols first found that book in 2003 in his brother's Memphis apartment; the film's Vandals club is a fictional version of the Outlaws.
- Jeff Nichols cast Jodie Comer as Kathy after sitting on two awards panels that honored her one-woman Broadway show Prima Facie, and after Adam Driver, her co-star in The Last Duel, spoke well of her.
- Austin Butler crashed a motorcycle while filming The Bikeriders when he hit a patch of wet leaves during a night shoot, but he landed on his feet; most of the cast learned to ride for the film, except Michael Shannon and a few others.
