Plot summary
In Friuli, in northeastern Italy, along a border where three countries meet, the stories of three people intertwine. Irene is a Carnian and a Christian. Pavel is Ukrainian and Jewish. Mehdi is Iranian and Muslim. Pavel and Mehdi live in Udine as illegal immigrants, sharing an apartment and their worries about their place in a city they find cold and unwelcoming. Irene is in love with Pavel, and she tries to help the two men. Monsignor Angelo, her spiritual father, advises and rebukes her. Mehdi is obsessed with an ancient guilt, and his fragile soul is drawn to evil. Above the three, other figures stand: an old blind man, and a mysterious, provocative woman.
