Plot summary
Emily and Randall reach his family's beach house in a remote shore town and are glad to find the place empty. Inside, they discover that a second couple is sharing the house: Mitch and Jane Turner, who know Randall's father from years back. Jane is dying, and Mitch has brought her here so she can enjoy one last holiday. There is room enough for everyone, so both pairs stay. At dinner Randall eats a local oyster; Emily declines. He then passes around the edible marijuana he packed, and Mitch and Jane accept. While it takes effect, Mitch remarks on the odd texture of the water, and everybody watches glowing microbes spread over the sand and the trees.
