Plot summary
Patricia Woodhouse learns by letter that her sister Susanna Baylock has died. A family quarrel had divided the two women for several years, and Susanna's estate, the Baylock residence, now falls to Patricia. She travels there to pay her respects and settle her sister's affairs. Annabel Blair, who served Susanna in the house, meets her and tells her the property is hers. Inside, Patricia is troubled by visions and by things she cannot account for, and she comes to believe the house keeps a very old secret. That secret is bound up with occult practices and with spirits of the dead, and Patricia needs to learn it before it is too late.
