Big break
In 1921, Carminati's popularity from playing in The Lady with the Camellias, opposite Alda Borelli, convinced Eleonora Duse to let him direct her company. He staged her final performances, among them Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea.
First role
Carminati made his film debut around 1914, after first finding success on the stage with the theater companies of Ettore Paladini and Ermete Novelli, and the opportunity came thanks to his elegant and refined presence.
Behind the camera
Carminati appeared in roughly thirty silent films. In the late 1910s, after those appearances, he started a production house of his own.
Beyond film
Carminati took the part of Bruno Mahler when Jerome Kern's Music in the Air had its world premiere at Broadway's Alvin Theater in 1932. He played that role again for the 1933 premiere at the 44th Street Theatre.
Beyond film
At Naples's San Carlo Theater in 1953, Carminati took the role of Saint Dominic in Joan of Arc at the Stake, appearing with Ingrid Bergman. Roberto Rossellini directed a movie version of the oratorio the following year.
