Plot summary
The Moore House in Villisca, Iowa, is the site of one of the most notorious unsolved mass murders in the country: eight people were killed there with an axe in 1912. Caleb Hirsche, Denny Shea and Jess are teenagers who hunt ghosts together, and they count themselves outcasts at their high school. They have come to the house for a private tour of the rooms where the killings happened. Partway through the visit, the tour is interrupted. That night the three of them sneak back in, looking for answers to the questions the case left open and unaware of what else is waiting for them in the dark.
