Plot summary
Dr. Henry West founded the Atticus Institute in rural Pennsylvania in the early 1970s, hoping to prove that powers such as ESP exist. He and his aides put each new volunteer through tests, and each one is unmasked as a fake, leaving the staff discouraged. Judith Winstead arrives next, delivered to the lab by her sister Margaret, whose complaint is that Judith's behavior has become disturbing. The standard tests give way at once; nothing the team devises is a match for what Judith can do. West's aides then add further tests, and those reveal abilities far larger than anyone there had expected.
