Plot summary

Espen, called the Ash Lad, rides in a royal carriage with his father and his half-brothers to a grand ball, where suitors are presented to Princess Kristin, daughter of King Erik. The king and queen are poisoned, and Per and Pål are arrested for it. Kristin and Espen set out to reach Soria Moria, a castle said to be built of pure gold, where a well holds the Water of Life, the only cure for her parents. The castle lies deep under an enchanted lake, guarded by monsters. Robbers and fortune hunters cross their path, and a band of Danes is hunting the same castle.
