Plot summary
Fifteen-year-old Joy Womack, an American dancer, trains at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, an institution with a reputation for being hard on its students. She wants to become a prima ballerina with the Bolshoi Company, and she studies under Tatiyana Volkova, a strict and demanding instructor. At the academy she meets another Russian student, Natasha, who holds the same ambition, and the two become rivals. A Russian boy named Nikolay Lebedev befriends her. Volkova keeps a ranking of the girls for an upcoming Bolshoi production, and someone plants glass in the shoes of Joy and Natasha, injuring them both.

- Director James Napier Robertson first turned down the producer's pitch for the film, which he called "Rocky with pointe shoes", but changed his mind after watching a New York Times short documentary about ballerina Joy Womack. He then met Womack in Los Angeles and was inspired by her charisma and work ethic.
