Plot summary
At Pacifica College, roommates Molly Morrison, Val, and Gina have reached the end of their college years. On their final night as students, the frustrations the three have kept to themselves come out into the open. Molly has not yet found the real love she wants. Val has begun to doubt that the love she has found is what she was looking for. Gina films everything, too busy recording to notice much of what is happening around her. The last party of the year at Pacifica College gets under way, and the night does not go the way any of them expected.

- The film was promoted with a poster of Susanna Hoffs in a skimpy bikini sipping a cocktail. Hoffs said the scene she does wearing nothing but her underwear was hard to do: "I knew if I had an incredible song blasting in the background I'd be able to do it, so I brought in a copy of Aretha's 'Respect'."
- The Allnighter was written and directed by the mother of its star, Susanna Hoffs, who had made music videos including the Bangles' Going Down to Liverpool and the short The Haircut with John Cassavetes. She said the three female leads are loosely based on herself and her two roommates at Yale.
- Although its star fronted the Bangles, Susanna Hoffs does not sing in the film and no Bangles music is featured. She said it is not a musical and singing would have confused the audience, particularly since that is not what her character is about.
- The Hoffs said they planned to make another film together despite The Allnighter's poor reception, with Tamar insisting that "The critics can't ruin our relationship". No subsequent film resulted.
