Plot summary
Alice Springs, in Australia's Northern Territory, sits near the best vantage point for an approaching total solar eclipse, and people are converging on it from several directions. Toby Delaney and his partners await a busload of German tourists until a truck driver demolishes their hotel, prompting Toby to improvise a bush trip, complete with chocolate biscuits he says are flavored with grubs. A medical student who collects plants, Matt Marione, rides The Ghan out of Adelaide and steps off between stops to hunt a scarce desert species. Connor Gregory jogs toward the eclipse site while his wife Helen and a grumpy friend of hers trail him in a motorhome. Jack Jaffers, once the singer of a rock band, abandons his group's reunion to return to the hotel where they first played.
