Plot summary
Late in 1941, Lt. Koji Kitami serves as a bombardier in Japan's Naval Air Force, stationed aboard an aircraft carrier. On 1 December a fleet of thirty warships sets out for Hawaii, and when negotiations in Washington break down, the task force commander, Adm. Tamon Yamaguchi, is told to strike Pearl Harbor. The raid goes ahead on 7 December. Kitami comes home to Japan and to Keiko, the sweetheart he has known since childhood. He loves her, yet he worries that taking a wife would make him a lesser naval officer. As Japan's campaigns in the Pacific bring one victory after another, he goes on fighting for the honor of his country.
