Plot summary
Emperor Xuan Zong mourns his late empress and shows no interest in the running of his empire, devoting his days to his lute and to music. His ministers search the kingdom for a woman who might lift his spirits. The Yang family, hoping to strengthen its standing at court, offers a daughter, but the Emperor hardly notices her. General An Lushan comes upon a girl working in the Yangs' kitchen who resembles the dead empress, and he and the family see in her a way to gain wealth and influence. After training at the school the former empress attended, she meets the Emperor, who at first sends her away, then is moved when she plays a tune he wrote. She becomes his favored companion.
