Plot summary

In Edo-period Kyoto, Mohei is an apprentice in the workshop of Ishun, a wealthy scroll-maker. Osan, Ishun's wife, was pressed by her mother into the marriage for Ishun's money, and her family's business needs bailing out; Ishun refuses to help. Osan asks Mohei to forge a money order in his master's name, and he agrees. A coworker catches him with the forged order and reports him to Ishun. Osan is about to confess when the maid Otama, who is resisting Ishun's advances, claims responsibility and says she is engaged to Mohei. Ishun puts Mohei under house arrest. One evening Ishun's aide finds Mohei and Osan together and infers adultery, and Ishun accuses his wife. Osan leaves and joins Mohei, and the pair flee.
