Plot summary
In 1984 Massachusetts, teenage Donny Berger pursues Mary McGarricle, his middle-school teacher, who first punishes him with detention and then seduces him. When the affair is exposed at a school assembly, Mary is convicted of statutory rape and sentenced to thirty years; she is pregnant, and custody of the baby goes to Donny's abusive father until Donny comes of age. Twenty-seven years later Donny is broke, alcoholic and owes the IRS $43,000, with prison ahead. His estranged son, once named Han Solo Berger, now calls himself Todd Peterson, works as a hedge fund manager and is marrying Jamie at his boss Steve Spirou's Cape Cod estate. A producer offers Donny $50,000 for a televised reunion with Todd and Mary, and Donny travels to the Cape uninvited.
