Plot summary
Heather has grown up believing that Gavin and Arlene Miller are her parents. A letter about the death of Verna Carson brings two pieces of news: Heather was adopted, and the woman's Texas estate now belongs to her. She drives out to see the property with Ryan, the man she is dating, Nikki, her closest friend, and Kenny, Nikki's partner. On the road the group gives a lift to a hitchhiker called Darryl. At the house, the lawyer Farnsworth gives Heather a letter from Verna that she does not open. The mansion is lavish and isolated, and the visitors decide to stay the night. A horror waits in the cellars beneath them.

- After James Wan left, Lionsgate took a bigger hand in Texas Chainsaw 3D, requiring a PG-13 rating, a present-day setting and 3D, and insisting on removing any depictions of cannibalism, largely because its own The Midnight Meat Train had bombed.
- Shot in Shreveport, Louisiana on a $20 million budget in 28 days, Texas Chainsaw 3D faced temperatures as high as 114 °F, sending crew members to hospital while the 3D equipment constantly overheated.
- Tremaine "Trey Songz" Neverson, cast as Heather's boyfriend, became the first black actor to star in a leading role in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, winning the part after John Luessenhop saw him perform at the BET Awards.
- Writers Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan left Texas Chainsaw 3D after a producer asked them to perform a rewrite without payment; John Luessenhop and Kirsten Elms, writer of Exeter and Banshee, then handled further rewrites.
