Plot summary
In a future where most of Earth's water has vanished, the Eco Protectorate controls what remains and runs orphanages where children are trained to serve in its police force. Jason, Terra, Tug, Rabbit, Metron and Daniel, the youngest, skate together in a rough sport that blends lacrosse and roller hockey, and the game is the one thing binding them against the Protectorate's efforts to bend them to its will. Hiding in a cave, Daniel comes upon a glowing orb that carries an alien intelligence called Bodhi, which restores the hearing of the deaf boy and shows other strange effects. Grock commands the Protectorate's officers, and the discovery sets the group's mind on leaving the orphanage and crossing the wasteland on their skates.

- Executive producer Mel Brooks personally sank about $1.5 million into Solarbabies, then took out a second mortgage on his home and had to raise a further $15 million through banks as production delays mounted.
- Filming was delayed by unexpected heavy rain, and disagreements between director Alan Johnson and the cast grew so bad that Mel Brooks flew to the set and ordered the actors back to work under threat of being fired, while poorly shot and miscolored footage forced costly reshoots.
- After repaying investors and loans, Mel Brooks reckoned he had personally lost about $9 million on Solarbabies, though he said the film eventually broke even years later through home video sales, calling that outcome a "miracle."
