Plot summary
A coup led by the exiled General Mustafa Yakubu overthrows President Samuel Azuka and plunges Nigeria into ethnic conflict. Aboard the carrier Harry S. Truman, Captain Bill Rhodes tasks a SEAL team under Lieutenant A.K. Waters to bring Dr. Lena Fiore Kendricks out of a remote Christian mission. Kendricks is an American citizen by marriage; her husband, Dr. John Kendricks, died at the hands of rebels in Sierra Leone. She treats the victims of the fighting and will not leave without her patients. Waters calls Rhodes, and the two settle on a compromise: refugees who can walk may come along. Kendricks' fellow doctors, the nuns and the priest choose to stay behind. At daybreak the team and the refugees set out, while Rhodes' order to stay clear of the conflict still stands.

- Bruce Willis filed a negligence lawsuit against Revolution Studios over injuries suffered during filming, claiming he was struck by a projectile on the forehead which caused him "substantial mental and physical injuries".
- The aircraft carrier scenes were filmed aboard the active USS Harry S. Truman, 60 miles east of Cape Hatteras in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Navy repeatedly turned the carrier so that director Antoine Fuqua would have beneficial lighting conditions.
- Fuqua admits that his and Bruce Willis's visions clashed, making their working relationship difficult: "Bruce got pissed. I got pissed. We saw two different movies."
