Winston Ntshona
Biography
Winston Ntshona was a South African actor and playwright who began in theater with the Serpent Players after meeting John Kani at Newell High School in Port Elizabeth. He spent his early years as a laboratory assistant at a timber factory until the group's growing reputation allowed him to act full time. With Athol Fugard and Kani he co-wrote The Island, and he also helped write Sizwe Banzi Is Dead; he and Kani performed in both plays internationally and shared the Tony for best actor in a play, a first for Black actors. On screen, his debut was The Wild Geese (1978), in which he played Julius Limbani. He went on to appear in Ashanti (1979) and The Dogs of War (1980), and later in A Dry White Season (1989), The Air Up There (1994), and Tarzan and the Lost City (1998).
