Plot summary
Ray Blent is an honor student and the basketball star of Custer University. June Ryder enrolls in home economics with a second aim, finding a husband, and she sets her sights on him. She joins the pom-pom girls, sits in on his classes and wins him over by pretending to share his interest in learning. He proposes on their first date, and the two need several thousand dollars to make a home together. A gambling syndicate then reaches Ray by radio message, offering him money to lose a coming game against a visiting Russian team. He turns the offer down but cannot return the four thousand dollars, since he does not know who sent it.

- Warner Bros. refused to approve the unknown Warren Beatty for Tall Story, so director Joshua Logan had to settle for his second choice, Anthony Perkins, after originally wanting Beatty and Jane Fonda to make their screen debuts together.
- Jane Fonda called her first film a "Kafkaesque nightmare," writing in her autobiography My Life So Far that during the making of Tall Story she suffered from bulimia, sleepwalking and irrational fears that she was "boring, untalented and plain."
- In 2019 Jane Fonda said that she and director Joshua Logan were both in love with lead actor Anthony Perkins while making Tall Story, causing tension during an already difficult shoot.
- Jane Fonda openly admitted how she got the part: producer-director Josh Logan was her godfather, and because of her name she was getting a role that would ordinarily take years to earn.
- Tall Story was Robert Redford's first film: he played a basketball player in an uncredited role, having previously been a replacement in the 1959 Broadway play.
