Biography

Gary Lockwood is an American actor who did stunt work and served as Anthony Perkins's stand-in before an uncredited bit role in Warlock in 1959. Born in Van Nuys, California, he appeared in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Wild in the Country (1961), then took his first lead in The Magic Sword (1962) and co-starred with Elvis Presley in It Happened at the World's Fair (1963). On television he supported Brett Halsey and Barry Coe in Follow the Sun from 1961 to 1962, appeared in Bus Stop, and starred from 1963 to 1964 as a young Marine lieutenant in The Lieutenant. He is best known for playing astronaut Frank Poole in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Gary Mitchell in Star Trek's second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. He also led Jacques Demy's Model Shop (1969), appeared with Elke Sommer in They Came to Rob Las Vegas (1968), and took guest roles into the mid-1990s.
