Plot summary
Ryder, seventeen and openly gay, lives in California. He and his parents, Cindy and Don, travel to a reunion at his uncle's farm in rural Nebraska. Ryder means to tell the whole extended family who he is. Cindy tells him not to, warning that the conservative relatives will react badly. His low-cut shirt and red shorts draw silent disdain from the older men, while his young female cousins, nine-year-old Molly among them, follow him around the property. Molly asks Ryder to come with her to the barn and see the bird nests up in the rafters, though Keith, her father, has warned her against climbing the hay bales. She runs out sobbing with her dress smeared in blood, and Keith accuses Ryder of assaulting her.
