Plot summary
Kay works in a factory and puts her faith in signs: a tea leaf reading told her Louis was the man for her, and she convinced him of it even though he had just become engaged to Cheryl, a co-worker. For their first anniversary Louis plants an elder tree in their garden. Uneasy about it, Kay digs it up and hides it. Then her sister Dawn, nicknamed Sweetie, returns after an absence with her boyfriend Bob, who she believes will get her into show business. Sweetie is erratic and often delusional, and fancies herself an actor; Gordon, the sisters' father, has never judged her and still sees his performing little girl. Their mother Flo has just left Gordon on a trial separation.

- Jane Campion and Gerard Lee wrote Sweetie between February and May 1987, after Campion decided she wanted to make a low-budget contemporary feature and came up with the character of Sweetie.
- Sweetie was the film acting debut of both Genevieve Lemon and Karen Colston, who said they felt an immediate sisterly connection to each other and to Campion, and the production team was heavily dominated by women.
- Campion said Philip French of The Observer called Sweetie "disgusting", and an Italian outlet asked her why she made a film that was "so dirty".
- Filmmaker Carol Morley, who calls Campion her greatest influence, named Sweetie her favorite film on an episode of Radio 4's The Film Programme.
