Plot summary
The summer before Wendy McCready leaves for college, her father, Charlie, tries to separate her from her childhood friends. He believes they have no ambition, and he disapproves of her boyfriend, Bart, above all. Charlie attempts to bridge the generation gap, trying beach volleyball and water skiing, and both attempts end in accidents that embarrass him. Wendy and her friends, Stanley among them, plan to attend City College together. After a day at the beach, Stanley drives the group home in his boss's ambulance. Late in the summer, a letter says Wendy has earned a full scholarship to Huntington College, where her parents studied.
