Plot summary
George Grieves turns forty. The guests at his birthday celebration trade stories about medical errors, and the talk stays with him. The next day he goes to Mt. Abaddon Hospital for a colonoscopy under Dr. Sharazi. When he comes round, the staff explain that two patients with similar names were confused, and he was given a sympathectomy for sweaty palms instead. He remains on the ward, and the things he encounters there grow more bizarre and harder to explain.
